All officials in the Chinese government were formerly obliged, under penalty of forfeiting their situation, to repair to the temple of Chim-Hoam when entering their official career, and thereafter twice a month, and there prostrate themselves before his altar, adore and worship the idol, with offerings of candles, perfumes, flowers, flesh, and wine, and there receive their oath of office.
