City in the South of Middle Egypt, on the eastern bank of the Nile; founded by the emperor Hadrian in the year 122. Jews seem to have come to the city at the same time as did the Greeks, drawn thither by the trade with the port of Myso Hormus on the Red Sea. In February, 1896, C. Schmidt discovered a Hebrew inscription of the second century in the old Christian cemetery of Antinoë. The letters of the inscription were originally covered with red paint; what remains of the inscription is In addition to the inscription there are a candelabrum with seven branches, and a cypress-tree (see "Ægyptische Zeitschrift," 34:164).
