Russian rabbi; born 1769; died in Novogrudok, government of Minsk, 1836. He became rabbi of that town in 1794, and held the position for forty-three years, until his death. He was one of the leading Talmudists of Russia in his time, and was especially noted for his keenness in that form of discussing knotty rabbinical questions which is known as PILPUL. David is the author of "Galya Massekta," a work still highly valued among old-style Talmudists. It was published at Wilna in 1844 in two volumes: the first containing responsa and novellæ; the second being devoted to sermons, commentaries on the Haggadah, etc.
