מַחֲלַת noun feminine only in Psalm titles ׳עַלמֿ Psalm 53:1; Psalm 88:1; apparently a catchword in a Song of Solomon , giving name to tune; meaning dubious; Aq Symm. ᵑ9מְחֹלֹת dance; see Ol Psalmen, p. 27 Bae Psalmen, p. xviii.

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition
מַחֲלַת m. (from the root חָלָח, Eth. ኀለየ፡ to sing, ψάλλειν), a harp, or stringed instrument, Psalms 53:1, 88:1 compare Eth. ማኀልት፡ a song, also κιθάρα. see Ethiopic version, Genesis 4:21. The signification of singing, in this root, arises from that of soothing, see Kal No. 1, and Piel.
