Apostle of the Acadians, born Saint Philippe, Quebec, 1831; died Saint Joseph, New Brunswick, 1895. He entered the Congregation of the Holy Cross, and was appointed to the Acadian parish of Memramcook, New Brunswick, 1864. He began the erection of Saint Joseph's College. He was the principal agency, because of his indomitable energy and confidence in God, in raising the Acadians, who for over a century had been deliberately held down as woodcutters and water carriers, to a position of genuine equality and freedom in intellectual, social, and commercial life.
