(c.474-545) Matron, Queen of the Franks, born probably Lyons; died Tours. She was the daughter of Chilperic, King of the Burgundians of Lyons, and wife of Clovis I, whom she converted, 496. After the death of Clovis, 511, Clotilda's son, Clodomir, was slain in a war against the Burgundians and two of his children were murdered by her other sons, Childebert and Clotaire, who subsequently made war on each other. Clotilda spent the remaining years of her life in prayer and penance near the tomb of Saint Martin, at Tours. Popular early poetry disfigured her noble personality, but historical research has permanently established her untarnished fame. She is represented in art with a battle in the background, in memory of the conversion of Clovis. Emblems: a crown, church in hand. Buried in the church of Saint Genevieve, Paris. Feast, June 3,.
