Crown colony of the British Empire, in the south of Spain. Christianity was introduced during the Roman domination. Held by the Goths and later by the Moors, Gibraltar was conquered by Alonzo de Arcos, August 20, 1462, the feast of Saint Bernard, who accordingly became its patron saint. Today the religion of the inhabitants is chiefly Catholic. The colony coincides with the Diocese of Gibraltar, erected, 1910, and directly dependent on the Holy See. See also:
