(Latin: great cape) A cope or robe worn by cardinals and bishops on occasions of ceremony, which may be described as a glorified cappa choralis. Its color for cardinals is ordinarily red, and for bishops violet. It has a long train, requiring a train-bearer, and a large hood, of fur in winter and of silk in summer. Canons and specially privileged prelates also wear the cappa magna, but folded and curtailed to signify an inferior dignity.
