- In general the appeasing or placating of an angry person.
- Theologically, one of the three fruits of every good work, the other two being impetration and merit.
- One of the four ends of the sacrifice of the Mass; this end regards man.
The propitiatory power of the Mass extends to "sins, punishments and satisfactions" for the living, and punishments for the departed.
