an English philologist and theologian, was born at Widehope in 1662, and was educated at Queen's College, Oxford. He obtained the degree of Master of Arts in 1684, and shortly afterwards that of Doctor of Divinity. In 1701 he was appointed librarian of the Bodleian library at Oxford, and died Nov. 27, 17.19. He is chiefly known on account of his Geographie Veteris Scriptores Graeci minores. etc. (Oxford, 1698, 1703, 1712, 3 vols. 8vo), and his edition of Josephus, entitled Flavii Josephi Opera (Oxford 1720,2 vols. fol.), which appeared shortly after his death.
