1. a. sword, as weapon of war Genesis 48:22 (E), Judges 7:14,20; 1 Samuel 21:9, and so in all periods; two-edged (short) sword וְלָהּ שְׁנֵי פֵיוֺ֖ת גֹּמֶד אָרְכָּהּ׳ח Judges 3:16, compare מִּיּוֺת׳ח Proverbs 5:4 (in simile), מִּיפִיּוֺת׳ח Psalm 149:6; see also ׳צוּר ח edge of sword Psalm 89:44.
b. gird on sword = ׳חָגַר הח 1 Samuel 17:39; 1 Samuel 25:13 (3t. in verse); Psalm 45:4 (׳הח׳ח עַל יָרֵך), שִׂים על ירך Exodus 32:27, compare especially 2 Samuel 20:8.

3 of tools used in hewing stoneחַרְבְּךָ הֵנַפְתָּ עליה Exodus 20:25; ׳יִתֹּץ בח Ezekiel 26:9, according to most = tools, axes, 'steel' (Co ' Eisen '), but possibly swords as implement ready to hand; 2 Chronicles 34:6 Qr בְּחַרְבֹתֵיהֶם with their tools; read perhaps בְּחָרְבֹתֵיהֶם in their ruins, Be, who compare Psalm 109:10; see חָרְבָּה below II. חרב (ᵐ5ᵑ9 omit חרב).
חֶרֶב [in pause חָֽרֶב, with suffix חַרְבִּי, pl. חֲרָבוֹת, const. חַרְבּוֹת], f.
(1) a sword [“as laying waste; others, as having the signification edge, comp. حرف, ܚܪܰܦ, to be sharp, acrid, whence حَرفُْ edge of a sword”]. (Arab. حَرْبُ, Syr. ܚܰܪܒܐܳ, whence Greek ἅρπη, see Bochart, Hieroz. ii. p. 760.) הִכָּה לְפִי ׃חרֶב to smite with the edge of the sword; to kill with the sword, Deuteronomy 13:16, 20:13 Joshua 6:21, 8:24 10:28.
(2) It is applied to other cutting instruments; e.g. a circumcising knife, Joshua 5:2, Joshua 5:3 a knife, or razor, Ezekiel 5:1 a graying tool, Exodus 20:25 an axe, Ezekiel 26:9. Poetically used of the curved tusks of the hippopotamus, Job 40:19.
