סָרַךְ or סָרֵךְ only in plur. סָרְכִין Chald. a royal minister of the Persians, Daniel 6:3, seqq. In Targ. סִרְכָא, סַרְכָן plur. סָרְכִין, stands for the Hebr. שׁוֹטֵר governor, overseer, magistrate. I cannot determine anything as to the etymology. It seems, however, the most simple to regard סָרַךְ as compounded of שַׂר سر a prince, and the servile termination, used in Persic, ־ַךְ, as in the word גַּנְזַךְ.
