American rabbi; born at Dresden, Saxony, July 9, 1804; died at New York March 11, 1874. He was educated at the University of Prague and in the theological circles of that city. He was president of the synagogue of his native city, and in 1859 came to America, where he accepted the position of rabbi-preacher in the Norfolk street ("Anshe Chesed") congregation of New York city. He served there but one year, when he became the proprietor and editor of a Jewish paper, "The Hebrew Leader," published in English and German. One of his daughters, Selma, became the wife of Isaac M. Wise of Cincinnati.
